Detained opposition activist faces 12 Years in prison
Liliya Chanyshova, a Russian opposition activist and former head of Navalny's headquarters in Ufa, who is accused of involvement in an extremist community, spoke in court during her final statement. Her speech was published by former deputy Yulia Galyamina. "My criminal case is political. Therefore, I do not consider myself a defendant. Being a politician is also a profession. Therefore, admitting guilt for me is like a teacher admitting guilt for being a teacher or a doctor admitting guilt for being a doctor," Chanyshova said.
She also spoke about the repression in Bashkortostan under the current governor, Radiy Khabirov, and in Russia under Vladimir Putin. "Putin means corruption, low wages and pensions, a declining economy, and rising prices. Putin means war! And it has already affected everyone!" Chanyshova declared. The opposition activist promised to continue fighting against corruption and lawlessness in Bashkortostan, and she addressed the judge, asking for support "as a politician, as a woman." "Give me a chance to become a mother," Chanyshova concluded her speech. Chanyshova was arrested in November 2021 as part of the "combined criminal case" against Russian politician Alexei Navalny and his closest associates. She is accused of involvement in an extremist community, misuse of official position, incitement to extremism, and creating an organization that violates citizens' rights. The prosecution is requesting a 12-year prison sentence for Chanyshova. The verdict is expected to be announced on June 14.
In December 2021, the Memorial Human Rights Center recognized Liliya Chanyshova as a political prisoner. In late January, Rosfinmonitoring (Russian Federal Financial Monitoring Service) included Liliya Chanyshova, along with Alexei Navalny and other associates, in the list of individuals involved in extremist or terrorist activities.
