Dangerous Profession: Lawyers Are Being Arrested in Crimea and Moscow
According to Mediazona, the Kyiv District Court of Simferopol in Crimea has arrested lawyer Alexei Ladin for 14 days after finding him guilty of displaying banned symbols. Additionally, Ladin was fined 45,000 rubles for "discrediting" the army. Both charges stem from his Facebook posts. The first post, dated July 31, 2018, involved him sharing a link to the Crimea.Realities photo gallery, which included drawings by prisoner Ismail Ramazanov. Within this gallery, experts identified symbols of the Battalion named after Noman Chelebidzhikhan, a group that the Supreme Court of Russia deemed a terrorist organization. The second charge relates to a post from March 8, 2022, where Ladin shared a link to an article titled "A Day in the Capital of the 'Russian World'," accompanying it with the hashtag #NOtoWAR. Alexei Ladin was detained in Sevastopol on October 13th, following his return from a trip to Rostov-on-Don. The lawyer has been assisting political prisoners and captive Ukrainian soldiers.
Last year, over a span of a few days, four local lawyers were detained in Crimea. The first was Crimean Tatar human rights defender Edem Semedlyaev, who, after his detention, was fined for someone else’s post that "discredited the Russian army." In court, he was represented by Nazim Sheikhmambetov, who was later arrested and detained for eight days for allegedly violating COVID-19 safety rules during a "rally." Sheikhmambetov was set to be defended by lawyers Aider Azamatov and Emine Avamileva, but both were also arrested and sent to temporary detention for eight and five days, respectively, on similar charges.
On October 13, 2023 searches were conducted at the residences of Alexei Navalny’s lawyers, Vadim Kobzev, Alexei Liptser, and Igor Sergunin, leading to their detention for alleged involvement in an extremist group. All three were later presented in court and placed in pre-trial detention until at least December.
