Alexey Moskalev, whose daughter drew an anti-war picture, was sentenced to two years in prison.
The father of the schoolgirl Masha Moskaleva, who drew an anti-war picture, has been sentenced to two years of imprisonment in a general regime colony. He was charged under the article related to repeated "discrediting" of the Russian army. The judge also announced that Moskaleva's daughter is being placed under the care of social services. Moskalev himself was not present at the announcement of the verdict. The court's spokesperson, Olga Dyachuk, stated that he had escaped from house arrest on the night before the verdict was announced.
Masha Moskaleva had drawn an anti-war picture with the inscriptions "No to war" and "Glory to Ukraine" during an art class. Alexey Moskalev and his daughter were interrogated by the Federal Security Service (FSB). FSB agents took Masha away the day after her father's court appearance. Moskalev had claimed that during the interrogation, the security forces had beaten his head against the wall and the floor. Afterward, he decided to leave with his daughter for the town of Uzlovaya in the Tula region, approximately 100 kilometers from Efremov, where the Moskalev family lived.
Alexey Moskalev was arrested on March 1, and a criminal case was initiated against him for the repeated "discrediting" of the army due to comments made on "Odnoklassniki" (a social media platform) regarding the killing of Bucha residents and Ukrainian prisoners in Ilovaisk. The exact comments that led to the case were not specified in the Investigative Committee's statement about the criminal case. Moskalev was placed under house arrest on March 2. Masha Moskaleva was taken to a center for minors, and her father has no contact with her.
The court considered Alexey Moskalev's criminal case in one day, on March 27. The prosecutor requested a two-year imprisonment sentence in a general regime colony for the defendant. During the court session, Moskalev claimed that he did not write the posts that led to the case and stated that his "Odnoklassniki" page had been hacked several times. At the trial, Moskalev made a brief closing statement: "If you were to ask people in this room about their views on the 'special operation' in Ukraine, I believe that even more than 90% of them would say they are against it. And I agree with them. How can one feel about deaths, about people who are dying?" On the day of the verdict, March 28, Moskalev's lawyer, Vladimir Bilyenko, managed to speak with the staff of the shelter where Masha is staying. They conveyed the girl's drawings and showed her letter to her father. Bilyenko said, "There is a big heart at the end and the words: 'Daddy, you are my hero.'"
